José Milhazes was born in Póvoa de Varzim. In 1977, he went to the Soviet Union to study Russian History at Moscow State University (Lemonossov).
He then devoted himself to translating literary and political works and, in 1989, began working as a journalist for TSF and other national media outlets. In 2009, he received his doctorate from the University of Porto and, in 2015, he returned to Portugal, with a unique knowledge of Russian society and Eastern Europe.
He is currently a commentator for SIC. Grandfather of five grandchildren, he lives with his wife, Siri, in Oeiras. He is the author of a vast number of published works, including Minhas Aventuras no País dos Sovietes (My Adventures in the Land of the Soviets) (2017) and Os Blumthal (The Blumthals) (2019). In 2013, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Portuguese Republic.
